If you ever want to take a crash course in product marketing and branding, just take a walk through your local grocery store. You will find that every square foot of space is dedicated to advertising products and steering you toward the products that they want you to buy. The products themselves are all easily identifiable and set themselves apart from the competition. If you look closely you will see that the vast majority of products use Shrink Sleeve Marketing to catch the customer’s eye. A Shrink Sleeve Labels are a plastic film that wraps around the product in question to give it 360 degrees of marketable space. Companies use it to print nutritional information, expiration dates, giveaways, advertising material and much more. The graphics are eye-catching and you can really make your product stand out for very little cost. In fact, Shrink Sleeve Marketing is one of the most economical ways to brand your product and make it stand out.

With the new emphasis on buying green products, Shrink Sleeves are gaining even more popularity. They have always been made out of varying thicknesses of materials like PVC, PETG, OPP, OPS, which are all recyclable. So savvy marketers are creating Shrink Sleeve Designs that have a perforation on the label that allows you to tear it off and recycle the label. That will give the product in question a big bonus to its marketability by utilizing what was probably there anyway.

Different printing methods can be used depending on the material that the label is made from. You can get a very subdued and old-fashioned look or a vibrant and eye-catching graphic heavy label without breaking the budget. Many manufacturers have given their product a very cutting age look while adding to the security of the product. If you look at some of the more popular energy drinks and health shakes you will see that the label covers the entire product and you have to peel off a portion to get to the cap and open it. That is added security against people tampering with the product. Some of the plastic caps can be opened and resealed without the customer being able to tell the difference. If the plastic label has been torn or removed than anyone can tell that the product is no longer trustworthy and should be thrown away.

<a

Azarenka beat defending champion Kim Clijsters 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

The latest Grand Slam meeting between Nadal and Federer—who’ve won 26 majors between them—was a semifinal worthy of a final.

Nadal didn’t excuse his celebration, but explained it as letting off steam.

“It’s a fantastic victory for me. Very, very happy playing against the greatest of the history in semifinals, big match on Rod Laver (court),” he said. “It’s one of the victories that’s going to stay in my mind forever. It’s a fantastic way to start the season. Very happy for everything.”

[Related: Ballboy makes incredible grab during Federer-Nadal match]

Apart from the 11 consecutive points Federer lost after a 10-minute delay near the end of the second set—while the Australia Day fireworks display was in progress—the match was tightly contested.

Nadal has labored with injuries since losing the U.S. Open final, and he’d talked about having time off next month to let his sore shoulder heal. On the eve of the tournament, he hurt his knee while he sat in a chair at his hotel— and thought for a while that he wouldn’t be able to play at the Australian Open. He has played with his right knee heavily strapped, but has still won six straight matches.

The 10th Grand Slam meeting between Nadal and Federer equaled the record for individual major matchups since the Open era began in 1968. The last time they met in a Grand Slam semifinal was at the French Open in 2005, when Nadal beat the then No. 1-ranked Federer en route to his first major title.

“We have had good matches over the years. I enjoy playing him. The crowd really gets into it, which is nice,” Federer said. “We have a lot of respect for each other, which is good, too, I think.”

For Nadal, the celebrations were more about his progress to the final rather than another win over Federer.

“That’s why, because … 24 hours to play my first match, I was in my room crying because I believe I didn’t” have the chance to play in Melbourne, he said. “So it was a very, very tough situation for me, these hours.

“Two weeks later I am here in the finals,” he said. “Having very bad expectations 24 hours before the first match, and now two weeks later I am playing well. I am in the final.”

For his part, Federer, thinks his rivalry with Nadal is still good for tennis.

“I hope it inspires future generations or other players, being nice to each other on the court and all that stuff … works as well at the highest of levels,” he said. “We also kind of play well against each other. I always think he plays a bit better against me than against other players, but that’s good for him.”

Even so, Federer didn’t hang around to watch Nadal’s celebration.

“I mean, I was slightly disappointed, obviously, leaving center court, because I felt like my game was good and I could have done something in the finals potentially,” he said. “But I don’t have to worry about that now anymore. It’s fine. I feel OK now. You know, it’s in the past already.”

“I had some good days of practice and I was ready to play,” a dumfounded Mickelson told reporters. “I don’t know what happened. I just wasn’t able to focus.

“Obviously, I made some bad swings just in the wrong spots and so forth, but I felt like my game was ready heading in. I don’t know what to say about the score because it was pathetic.”

Asked why he had difficulty in focusing, Mickelson replied: “I just didn’t put the ball where I wanted to and see it clearly. I ended up making a lot of swings where I missed the ball in the wrong spot.”

Mickelson, who lives in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, had high hopes for this week, having tied for 49th at the Humana Challenge on Sunday at La Quinta where he improved after opening with a two-over-par 74.

“It’s a little disappointing that the first round here and the first round last week have been so poor, because I felt really ready and sharper than I have in a long time starting the year,” said the four-times major champion. “So to shoot those numbers, I don’t get it.”

Mickelson, who this week is competing in his second PGA Tour event of the year, faces an uphill task to make the cut but he will at least have the easier North Course to negotiate in Friday’s second round.

“There is an opportunity tomorrow to go really low over on the North if you play well,” the 41-year-old said. “I birdied 17 today and I thought I had a birdie on 18, but I missed that little one there.

“That would have gotten me to a point where I thought if I could have shot six or seven under par on the North, I’d at least get here for the weekend and build some momentum.”

Mickelson’s worst score at the Torrey Pines event was a 78 in the third round in 1978.

(Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes in San Diego; Editing by Frank Pingue; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

“Coach Schiano is a bright, meticulous teacher who knows how to get the most out of his players,” general manager Mark Dominik said. “He built and ran a pro-style program at Rutgers, and he’s a defensive-minded coach whose teams have always been characterized by toughness and a physical style of play.”

Schiano was at Rutgers for 11 seasons, taking them from college football laughingstocks to a program that has had winning records in six of the last seven years. He was an assistant coach in the NFL with Chicago from 1996-98.

The Scarlet Knights appointed offensive line coach Kyle Flood as interim head coach while the school searches for Schiano’s replacement.

The Bucs fired Morris on Jan. 2 after Tampa Bay lost 10 straight to end the season, most of them by double-digit margins. The collapse following a promising 4-2 start came only a year after the NFL’s youngest team went 10-6 and narrowly missed the playoffs.

The Glazer family that owns the team interviewed at least 10 candidates for the opening, including Oregon’s Chip Kelly, who was offered the position before turning it down earlier this week.

The Bucs also talked to former NFL head coaches Mike Sherman, Brad Childress and Marty Schottenheimer; Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski; Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray; Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer; Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements and former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who accepted the head coaching opening with the Miami Dolphins.

An 11th known candidate, ex-Dallas Cowboys coach and current Houston defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, canceled a scheduled interview with the Bucs that would have taken place while the Texans were in the playoffs.

Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer said the club was thrilled to entrust the team’s rebuilding project to Schiano.

“During our thorough search, we met with numerous impressive candidates, but coach Schiano surely distinguished himself,” Glazer said. “From his leadership skills to his considerable track record, he is, simply put, the right man for the job.”

It’s not the first exhaustive search the Glazers have conducted for a coach.

The Bucs pursued Steve Spurrier before hiring Tony Dungy in 1996, then tried to lure Bill Parcells and Steve Mariucci to Tampa Bay before trading two first-round draft picks, as well as a pair of second-rounders and $8 million cash to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for the opportunity to negotiate a contract with Jon Gruden after the 2001 season.

Gruden led the Bucs to their only Super Bowl title the following season, but Tampa Bay hasn’t won a playoff game since. The Glazers fired him three weeks after the Bucs lost the final four games of 2008 to miss the playoffs, and promoted Morris as his successor.

Tampa Bay went 17-31 under Morris, who served as his own defensive coordinator. The Bucs allowed a franchise-record 494 points in 2011, including 31 of more in seven of the last eight games.

In addition to fixing a defense that’s been rebuilt over the past two drafts, getting young quarterback Josh Freeman back on track will be a priority this offseason.

Freeman threw for 25 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 2010, his second year in the league and his first as a full-time starter. The 24-year-old passed for 16 TDs vs. 22 interceptions this season.

The timing of the move could put Rutgers in a bind with national signing day less than a week away. This is a pivotal time in the recruiting process, with coaches locking up commitments from high school prospects who make those agreements official by signing national letters of intent starting Wednesday.

Schiano’s contract with Rutgers runs through 2016 and pays him around $2.35 million per year.

He played linebacker at Bucknell, but never in the NFL. His first big break in coaching came at Penn State, where Joe Paterno hired him to coach defensive backs in 1991. He was at Penn State through 1995, before being hired by the Bears.

Because of his success at Rutgers, there had often been speculation for years about Schiano possibly replacing Paterno when the Hall of Famer was done coaching. But when Penn State was looking for a replacement after firing Paterno amid a child sex-abuse scandal involving one of his former longtime assistants, the school hired Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

Schiano has been courted by several other colleges during his time at Rutgers, most notably Miami in 2006 and Michigan in 2007.

“I’ve had several opportunities over the years and none of them felt right,” Schiano told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., as he left Rutgers’ football facility Thursday night “This time, this one felt right.”

Schiano’s first four seasons at Rutgers produced losing seasons, but the program he took over was practically at rock bottom in major college football. Before he was hired, the Scarlet Knights played in only one bowl game in their history.

Schiano brought structure and discipline to a program that sorely lacked both on every level. Not only has Rutgers become a consistent winner in the Big East, but the Scarlet Knights have regularly been among the top teams in the country when it comes to graduating players. He also encouraged the school to secure funding for multimillion dollar upgrades to Rutgers’ facilities, including a major stadium renovation.

In 2005, Rutgers went 7-5 and the next season the Scarlet Knights were 11-2. They played in six bowls under Schiano, winning five, including a victory over Iowa state in the Pinstripe Bowl to cap a 9-4 season in 2011.

___

AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo in New York contributed to this report.

The buildings, one 20 floors high, collapsed in a cloud of dust behind the city’s 100-year-old Belle Epoque-style Municipal Theater. They housed offices that had mostly closed for the day and few people were on the normally busy street at the time.

One key member of the firefighters’ crew involved in the rescue plan told Reuters that “the chances of finding people alive from rubble are growing dimmer by the minute.” The source is not allowed to speak on the record about the situation.

Paes said the cause of the collapse could have been a structural failure as a result of building work underway inside one of the buildings. He said there was no gas leak that could have caused an explosion. Paes said the collapse was not caused by an explosion.

“The probability of this having been caused by an explosion is nil. The point is, it is not normal that three buildings fall down in downtown,” he said.

Engineers said work was being done with no permits from city regulators on two floors of the taller building, which could have caused it to collapse and bring the other buildings down.

Building work was underway on the third and ninth floors that was not authorized by the Rio building commission, said Luiz Antonio Cosenza, head of the local engineers association.

“The most likely scenario was structural failure,” he said.

DECREPIT INFRASTRUCTURE

Rio is struggling to address concerns about its decrepit infrastructure, unreliable power supplies and deficient public transportation as it prepares to host global sporting events.

Construction and renovation of 12 stadiums for the soccer World Cup in 2014 is behind schedule and there is concern that Brazil’s overcrowded and inefficient airports will be not able to handle masses of sports fans expected to attend the events.

The buildings collapse comes months after an explosion apparently caused by a gas leak ripped through a restaurant in downtown Rio, killing three people and igniting more concern about the state of the city’s infrastructure.

In recent months, Rio’s inhabitants have had to deal with exploding sewer lines and landslides in the city’s slums caused by heavy rain and deforestation.

The collapsed buildings had a bakery and an Itau Unibanco Holding bank branch on the ground floor and were near the headquarters of state-run companies such as oil giant Petrobras and development bank BNDES.

Witnesses said they heard the structures cracking and saw plaster falling before the buildings crumbled, causing panic in the streets and covering parked cars with dust and debris.

“It was like an earthquake. First some pieces of the buildings started to fall down. People started to run. And then it all fell down at once,” a witness who identified himself as Gilbert told Reuters.

One man said he was on the 10th floor and ran down the stairs just in time to escape the collapse.

“My wife was inside. I spoke with her just before the collapse,” another man in tears said on television.

(Additional reporting by Rodrigo Viga Gaier; Writing by Anthony Boadle; editing by Christopher Wilson and Sandra Maler)

<a

Finally, when someone rose in Joe Paterno’s defense to argue that he had been made a scapegoat, the audience was instantly on its feet, applauding thunderously.

Anger and resentment came spilling out at a campus memorial service Thursday for the football coach, two months after he was summarily fired by the trustees.

It was Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight who broke the dam, defending Paterno’s handling of child-sex allegations that were leveled against a former coaching assistant.

“If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno’s response,” Knight said. Paterno’s widow, Sue, was among those rising to their feet.

Later, Paterno’s son Jay received a standing ovation when he declared: “Joe Paterno left this world with a clear conscience.”

Capping three days of mourning on campus, the 2½-hour ceremony was filled with lavish praise that probably would have embarrassed Paterno, who died Sunday of lung cancer at 85 after racking up more wins — 409 — than any other major-college football coach and leading his team to two national championships in 46 seasons.

One by one, Penn State football stars and others credited Paterno with building not just better athletes but better men — and women. He was saluted for his commitment to sportsmanship, loyalty, teamwork, character, academics and “winning with honor.” He was called a good father, a good husband, a good neighbor, a good friend, a good teacher.

Players from each decade of Paterno’s career spoke affectionately about him, saying he rode them hard but always had their best interests at heart and encouraged them to complete their educations and make something of themselves.

Though the Penn State campus has been torn with anger over the child-sex scandal and Paterno’s dismissal, Jay Paterno said his father didn’t hold a grudge.

“Perhaps his truest moment, his living testimony to all that he stood for, came in the last months of his life. Faced with obstacles and challenges that would have left a lesser man bitter, he showed his truest spirit and his truest self,” Paterno said.

Only one member of the university administration — the dean of the college of liberal arts — and no one from the Board of Trustees spoke at the memorial, which was arranged primarily by the Paterno family.

Among the speakers were Michael Robinson, who played for Paterno from 2002 to 2005, quarterback Todd Blackledge from the 1980s and Jimmy Cefalo, a star in the 1970s. All three went on to play in the NFL.

Former NFL player Charles V. Pittman, speaking for players from the 1960s, called Paterno a lifelong influence and inspiration.

Pittman said Paterno pushed his young players hard, once bringing Pittman to tears in his sophomore year. He said he realized later that the coach was not trying to break his spirit but instead was “bit by bit building a habit of excellence.”

“He was building a proud program for the school, the state and the hundreds of young men he watched over for a half-century,” said Pittman, now a media executive on the board of The Associated Press.

Similarly, Chris Marrone, whose playing career at Penn State was cut short by injuries, said Paterno molded him into a young man with “the strength to overcome any challenge, any adversity.”

Paterno was fired Nov. 9 after he was criticized for not going to police in 2002 when he was told that a former member of his coaching staff, Jerry Sandusky, had been seen sexually assaulting a boy in the showers. Sandusky was arrested in November and is awaiting trial on charges that he molested 10 boys over a 15-year span.

As the scandal erupted, Pennsylvania’s state police commissioner said Paterno may have met his legal duty but not his moral one. Penn State president Graham Spanier was also fired in the fallout.

Among those at the memorial was former athletic director Tim Curley, who is awaiting trial on charges he lied to the grand jury that investigated Sandusky.

About midway through the ceremony, Knight became the first speaker to explicitly address the scandal. He said the coach “gave full disclosure to his superiors, information that went up the chains to the head of the campus police and the president of the school. The matter was in the hands of a world-class university, and by a president with an outstanding national reputation.”

Lanny J. Davis, an attorney for the board, responded after the service by saying: “All the reasons for the board’s difficult and anguished decision — made unanimously, including former football players and everyone who still loves Coach Paterno and his memory — reached a decision which was heartfelt. All 32.”

“The facts speak for themselves” and include the grand jury testimony, he said.

After the memorial, Marrone said Knight was his “new hero” for expressing the “pent-up frustration” many people are feeling.

“I think the response that he got is indicative of how folks feel,” Marrone said.

Jay Paterno, who served under his father as quarterback coach, began his remarks by imitating his father’s raspy, high-pitched voice, telling the audience, “Sit down! Sit down!”

Growing serious, Paterno described his last moments with his father. As Paterno lay dying, his son kissed him and whispered in his ear.

“Dad, you won,” Jay Paterno said he told him. “You did all you could do. You’ve done enough. We all love you. We won. You can go home now.”

<a
